PEX-AL-PEX pipes, or PEX/Aluminum/PEX, are made of a layer of aluminum sandwiched between two layers of PEX. The metal layer serves as an oxygen barrier, stopping the oxygen diffusion through the polymer matrix, so it cannot dissolve into the water in the tube and corrode the metal components of the system. It also bends better, as the shape memory of the PEX is offset by the aluminum.
PEX-AL-PEX is making waves in both the plumbing industry and the radiant heating industry. Its market share is about 50% of both the plumbing and heating market on a worldwide scale. Why? This product provides a unique installation and performance features that over shadows existing piping materials.
The product differs from regular PEX pipe due to the characteristics of the aluminum layer, which enable the tube to be formed in an angle and stay in place. This makes it easy for one person to install because the PEX-AL maintains its shape once bent or installed. Compared to other metallic pipes, PEX-AL-PEX can bend easily by hand and take the shape you determine. This means that elbows and 45 degree fittings are unnecessary. Imagine the ease in installation when you eliminate sweating metal pipes and fittings. The feel of the aluminum also assures that the bend do not exceed the bending radius of the pipe.
