The Protean Instrument IPC-9025 is the absolute hands down performance leader among automatic alpha/beta counting systems. The IPC-9025 is the only system available that offers reliable windowless operation, ultra-low background performance, light weight, and superb maintenance access in a single system. IPC-9025 systems have been operating in the field for over 10 years, with a reputation for absolute dependability. IPC-9025's placed in service over ten years ago have been upgraded to current operational and performance specifications at far less than the cost of a new system.

The IPC 9025 is an ultra-low background alpha/beta counting system that can be operated with or without an ultra-thin window. The unique Protean Instrument hemispherical gas flow proportional detector delivers the very highest performance available in a production system. The IPC-9025 can be switched easily between window and windowless mode by the user. With the window installed the system delivers performance unsurpassed by an automatic system. In windowless mode the system delivers alpha efficiency of nearly 50%. Beta efficiencies increase even more. C14 efficiency increases from 12% to 30%; Ni63 increases from 17% to 48%; Sr90 increases form 55% to 65%. These efficiency improvements combined with the ultra-low background performance of the system yield figures of merit 4 times better than any other system. The low background high efficiency performance of the IPC-9025 is achieved without any compromises. The system is the lightest weight in its class. At 430 pounds it is 250 pounds lighter than any others available. The system has a unique shield and detector design that allows window changes in minutes, without requiring any rear access to the system. Every critical function in the IPC-9025 is in a discrete module that is replaceable from the front of the system.
The system has PC interface features built in, yet is fully operational without a PC. All sample and calibration data collected on the IPC-9025 can be downloaded to a PC via PIC Communicator and reported using PIC Routines. The IPC-9025 also has full built-in printer support. It will provide direct graphical printout of sample data, plateau settings, calibration settings, and complete QC information.
Radiochemistry applications require systems that can maintain high sample throughput with very high counting sensitivity. Drinking water samples are often counted to detect extremely low activity levels, and the samples often contain background levels of activity. Three characteristics are critical for a system used in the radiochemistry lab:

* Extremely high sample counting efficiency
Protean's IPC-9025 achieves ultrahigh performance by combing the lowest background available in any system, with super efficient windowless operation, and an automatic sample changer. Operating in windowless mode, the IPC-9025 can reach counting efficiencies of greater than 60% for Sr90 in a 5/16 inch planchet. Systems with an ultra-thin window can only reach 35-40% Sr90 efficiency in a 5/16 inch planchet. Windowless efficiency for Ni63 is greater than 45% in a 5/16 inch planchet, compared to 3% for a windowed system at the same depth. Alpha efficiency also increases by a substantial amount. Th230 for example, increases from 25% to 49% in a 5/16 inch planchet. The IPC-9025 also has count to MDA. With count to MDA and windowless operation the IPC-9025 can deliver the same sample throughput as a 4 detector manual system.
