Varian spectraa 880 aa spectrometer & graphite furnace

Varian SpectrAA 880 Atomic Absorption Spectrometer
For sale- a Varian SpectrAA 880 Atomic Absorption Spectrometer. In the Varian sales brochure for this series dated September 2000, the 880 is described as their highest performance AA Spectrometer with research grade optics. A separate brochure for the two top of the line Zeeman pieces, the 220 and the 880, is here (both are in pdf format). I don t think this is a Zeeman piece unless adding the graphite furnace makes it one (more on that in a minute). I do not have a manual for the unit, nor is there any software. Unless you see it pictured or read about it in the listing it is NOT included in the sale. The Varian website refers to these instruments as Series 4, and it looks like the current models are Series 5. So what you have here is a recent vintage piece of equipment, considerably more recent than most of the stuff that comes in through the state surplus system.
This spectrometer was surplused by the Virginia Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services. Why is that important? The Virginia DCLS not only handles lab testing for state and local governments in the Commonwealth of Virginia, they are also one of the first 4 state laboratories selected and funded by the federal government to test specimens from people for evidence of exposure to chemical weapons. When that selection first took place DCLS flushed out some very nice lab equipment and replaced it with the latest stuff. So even though this is a research grade AA spectrometer less than ten years old I suspect that their association with the federal government requires that the instrumentation available be cutting edge. So chances are it was functional when removed from service. If this had come from a state university I would be much more suspicious of the motives involved. The surplus paperwork, normally not left attached, indicates it to be in fair condition, but it looks much better than that to me. If it was non-functional I would have expected them to circle poor instead.
As you can see in the pictures it is connected via an umbilical to a Varian GTA-100 Graphite Tube Atomizer. Because the instrument is set up for use with the graphite furnace it does not have a burner attachment in place, instead it has the furnace attachment pictured. Also includes the autosampler/sample dispenser shown, which does not include a carousel or anything not pictured. Again, I do not have any software, manuals or other documentation, so if you need that and don t already have it you will have to acquire it elsewhere. I found a picture elsewhere that showed the sample dispenser attached to the bracket on the right side of the GTA, only in that picture the bracket is on the left side of the GTA. The umbilical cord isn t long enough to move it far enough away to position the dispenser between the two, so the only other placement that would work would put the GTA on top. Which is where it was when I bought it but I thought that was just to make it easier to move. But that would block access to the lamps. Or lamp, only one lamp is installed, Pb. So I guess that is the only thing it was testing for. I hung the sample dispenser on the front because it fit there, not because that is where it should go.
Please check out my other listings for other cool lab and test equipment, including a Varian SpectrAA 220FS AA Flame Spectrometer that was in the same lot with the 880.
