Mandrel align tailstock ctr for south bend 9 10 lathe

1. Just mount this mandrel between centers on your South Bend or similar lathe.
2. Place an indicator on the centerline of the mandrel as close to the end of the mandrel as possible on the headstock end.
4. Move the carriage and indicator to the tailstock end of the mandrel.
5. Adjust the tailstock (tailstock not the indicator) to Zero indicator reading.
6. Return the carriage and indicator back to the headstock end.
7. Repeat this process as necessary to get + or - .001" TIR on the indicator.
8. When this is achieved your tailstock is in good alignment with the headstock.
9. Now you are ready to do some precision machining.
TIP: This will help prevent breaking center drills, and produce more accurate/precision diameters.
PERSONAL PREFERENCE: I most always use a Starrett 196 indicator on lathes, very versatile and plenty of range.
