Soda ash is the active ingredient in washing soda. The chemical name for it is sodium carbonate, chemical formula Na2CO3. The purpose of sodium carbonate is simply to increase pH. CAS : 497-19-8
Keeping the coffeepot clean and running well is one task that soda ash can help with. Over time, repeated use of a coffee maker or an espresso machine will result in buildup in the boiler section of the machines. Running a solution of soda ash and water through the system from time to time will act as a descaling agent and help prevent the buildup and keep the machine functioning at optimum levels. This means your machine will last longer and produce a good tasting product consistently.
For cleaning your coffee, espresso or cappuccino machine, mix about 2 teaspoons with the amount of water you would normally use to make a pot of coffee in your machine then pour into machine and run it through a brew cycle, heavily scaled or stained machines may require slightly more or a second application, then be sure to run your machine through another brew cycle with clean water only.

How to use it to raise the pH and alkalinity of your reef aquarium: Add it in a gradual fashion - the recommended rate is increasing the pH by at most 0.25 units daily. To do that, add 0.010 grams soda ash to each liter. To convert gallons into liters divide the number of gallons by 0.264 gallons/liter. Then, use the equation "(0.010 grams soda ash) x (number of liters of aquarium water) = (grams of soda ash to add)". Do not add granules directly to the aquarium, as they may "burn" sensitive animals, instead, dissolve in a glass of water, then pour the solution into the aquarium. Make changes gradually, and check the pH often with a reliable meter. As long as it's less than 8.2-8.3, you can continue treating.
Used in pools and spas used to neutralize the acidic effects of chlorine and raise pH.
In taxidermy, sodium carbonate added to boiling water will remove flesh from the skull or bones of trophies to create the "European skull mount" or for educational display in biological and historical studies.
Also used as a food additive as an acidity regulator, anti-caking agent, raising agent and stabilizer, also used in place of sodium hydroxide for lying,
Sodium carbonate can be mixed with water and used in a spray bottle to encapsulate and kill mold. It is also used to blast off mold from wood or other materials.
The home also benefits from the presence of soda ash in the laundry room. Considered to be a useful additive in home detergents, soda ash is often referred to as washing ash or washing soda. The addition of the soda ash prevents hard water from bonding with the detergent, allowing for a more even distribution of the cleaning agent during the washing cycle. In addition, soda ash has demonstrated an ability to help remove alcohol and grease stains from clothing, which can make the entire process of doing laundry a little less taxing.
Great for cleaning outdoor furniture too. Just 1/2 cup washing soda in 1 gallon hot water - cleans outdoor cushions, plastic furniture , and in stronger mix will clean grills and ovens too!
Add some Borax, and some shaved bar soap to make laundry and all purpose cleaner too!
