The device is a freestanding unit that is placed adjacent to the patient and opposite the operator performing the procedure. The base unit generates a low strength magnetic field over the operating surface. Small lightweight position sensors are attached to the sonographic transducer and to the shaft of the biopsy needle, typically near the hub. When the sensors are both within the magnetic field, their location and orientation in space are detected by the base unit.
