Spectra Physics Model 589 Manual
The Spectra Physics air-spaced etalon is an accessory that limits the oscillation of ion lasers to a single longitudinal mode.
The etalon will allow more than one half the intracavity energy to oscillate in single longitudinal mode, and causes mode amplification by eliminating mode competition. Any application that invloves long coherence length and narrow linewidth demands single longitudinal mode (SLM) through the use of an etalon. By observing the laser output on a spectrum analyzer the etalon can be set to isolate any longitudinal mode within the laser gain profile.
The etalon comprises two parallel windows that have a reflective coating on their inside faces, and antireflective coatings on their outside faces. The windows are optically contacted to a hollow titanium-silicate spacer that is insensitive to temperature changes, its thermal expansion co-efficient is less than 10^-7 degree C. A thumbwheel exerts pressure on the etalon, effecting changes in its length that allow selection of individual longitudinal modes.
This system is in MINT condition. In fact I don't think it was ever installed or used. The heater is in its original Spectra Physics box! Note the manual is SP 589, but the etalon is model 583. I believe everything is the same but the difference in model numbers has to do with the Spectra Physics lasers it was supposed to fit into; ie 164, 165, 171, 2020 etc...
If you want I can email you a scanned copy of the manual.
