The AFM provides multiplexing/demultiplexing of ATM cell streams between the AnyMedia Access system's broadband feeder interface and the AnyMedia xDSL Application Packs (APs), allowing various services such as internet access, remote LAN access, virtual private networking, and Voice-over-DSL (VoDSL) to be supported over xDSL. In addition, the AFM serves as the common control unit providing timing synchronization and overseeing the operations of the xDSL APs. The LPA9XX-series AFM provides a feeder facility interface toward the ATM network. Many of the LPA9XX AFMs provide additional feeder interfaces on the AFM for daisy-chaining between AnyMedia system shelves, facilitating efficient bandwidth utilization. They also support both duplex and simplex operations and are designed with rich OAM&P features.
