Bi-metal compound bar bimetalic strip
Two metals of different heat coefficients are laminated together and mounted in a wooden handle. This device demonstrates the unequal expansion of different metals by bending when heated. Shows the principle behind a bimetallic strip thermometer which relies on the fact that different metals expand at different rates as they warm up. By bonding two different metals together, you can make a simple electric controller that can withstand fairly high temperatures. As the strip bends it can make contact with a switch and turn an oven or refrigerator on or off.
