These switches are direct replacements for slotted opto switches for use in more arduous environments. They have a magnetic sensor in one leg and a magnet in the other. When a magnetic material is placed in the gap this couples the magnetism to the detector and turns off an open collector transistor. The internal operating magnet has quite a strong field providing good immunity to external magnetic fields. I tested some of these parts using a piece of 1mm mild steel as magnetic medium and this worked ok.
Connect a 5 to 12V supply +to red wire, -to black wire. Connect a 1Kohm pull up resistor between the supply and the green wire. The junction between the resistor and the green wire is the output, near +supply with the gap closed by a magnetic material, 0v with the gap open. This will drive logic or a MOSFET interface directly. Take care not to exceed the max. current of 25mA in the output lead.
